Donate a Boat
A large portion of our sail training programs for young people is funded through boat donations. Donating your boat is simple, because we take care of all the details! We can arrange for a third-party appraisal of the value of your vessel, and issue you a tax receipt for that amount. Depending on your tax situation, in Canada you can claim up to 75% of your net income each year in charitable donations; in the U.S. the current amount is 50%. We look after the hassles and costs of moorage, transportation and broker's fees where applicable. Your boat will be sold by S.A.L.T.S, with all proceeds going to fund our life changing programs for young people!
People give boats to S.A.L.T.S. for a variety of reasons:
- To benefit young people
- To receive a tax credit
- To avoid the hassles of selling the boat
- To avoid costly broker’s fees
- To no longer have to pay moorage
- To avoid the time and cost involved in ongoing upkeep/repair of the vessel
What Boats are Suitable?
Sail or power, large or small, fibreglass, wood, steel or ferrocement—we've accepted them all over the years. We may ask you to deliver small boats to us yourself, and “ project boats” are generally not financially viable. As a rule of thumb, a boat must be capable of being moved by sea or road transport and its value must substantially exceed the costs of delivery. Boats in Eastern Canada, the United States or further away are handled by S.A.L.T.S. agents; consequently, the value of the boats needs to be higher as additional costs are involved.
What Happens to Your Boat?
The Society's first donation was the schooner Robertson II which provided young people with sea-based programs for 25 years. However, not every boat is suitable for sail training. New owners will sometimes contract the shipyard for further commissioning or alterations and so provide valuable training in boat building and maintenance for crew and volunteers.

or fill out this form
to tell us about your boat. We can answer any questions you have. When you are ready to move forward, we will draw up a Transfer of Ownership agreement
and arrange to meet you (and your boat) at your convenience. We will arrange for an independent survey (at our cost) and delivery of your boat to our yard in Victoria. If you already have a recent survey of your boat this may be acceptable. Upon receipt of the surveyor's report, we will issue you a tax receipt for the appraised value of your boat, a copy of the survey and a year’s complimentary membership in S.A.L.T.S. The boat must be donated free and clear of all liens and encumbrances.
